also inside tsuyuten shrine was a poster for an upcoming bunraku performance. bunraku is a form of traditional japanese puppet theater - i've never seen live bunraku myself, but i intend to make it a point to fix that while i'm here. bunraku was actually founded in osaka in 1684, and osaka happens to be home to the National Bunraku Theatre. i've seen some footage of bunraku being performed - it's some truly amazing stuff, with three puppeteers controlling each puppet, whose movements and expressions are shockingly lifelike. sadly, bunraku has been overshadowed by kabuki, both literally and figuratively.
