Brainerd, IfIHadAHiFi, & more
Thursday May 31 2007
and WORT 89.9FM
present CHARLIE DON'T SURF - LIVE
The music begins promptly when the bar opens at 9PM with an hour long DJ mix from JAKE SHUT
, host of long running WORT radio show Charlie Donít Surf
, featuring his trademark uptempo and underground mix of punk, indie rock, garage, metal, hardcore, stoner, hip hop, Americana, no wave
and various obscure blasts from the past. The DJing is interrupted throughout the night for LIVE PERFORMANCES
from three regional acts, handpicked by Jake Shut, who play their sets after 10PM.
[rock / metal / punk - Madison, WI]
Retooled for 2007 now featuring Chad Ovshak (Helliphant, Uncle Eddie, echo-static and others) pounding the skins and Johnny Vortex (echo-static, Brick Shit House and others) on second guitar, Brainerd stands it up and burns it out. Laced with both liltiing melodies and ear-crushing rhythms, Brainerd has earned their reputation as musical pugilists skating on thin ice while hammering the upbeat until it breaks. Preaching the gospel of the streets. They conquer subject matter diverse as multiple suicides, ghosts, one-legged-bartender-hookers and five-legged-dogs. Brainerd is not for the squeamish and never has been. Straight-up rock and roll from the crooked side of the street, dope-sick, heart-broke, and sick of life with a silver lining, a tinge of hope. This band looks unblinkingly into the eye of the beast and smiles. Children of the street be strong, Brainerd has arrived... you are not alone.
Put Sonic Youth, Orson Welles, Devo, Prince, Mick Foley, and Nikola Tesla into a wrestling ring for a tables, ladders, and chairs battle royale. Who'd win? Well, Mick Foley, because he actually has the training. But the real answer is "the listening public," because the gigantic universe-defending robot that would rise from the sum of these parts like the vehicle-based Voltron would be IfIHadAHiFi, a cacophonous wall of noise hiding catchy-as-hell hooks, dance beats, and broken bones.
